She attended University of Ottawa as an exchange student in the 2017-2018 academic year. She examines questions about the dissolution phase of romantic relationships, such as how individuals decide about their romantic relationships, how they handle the break-up process, and the aftermath of break-ups. Her doctoral dissertation, supervised by Prof. Dr. Bengi Öner-Özkan, aims to understand what sort of factors (individual, dyadic, and contextual) individuals take into consideration when deciding about their romantic relationships. She integrates both quantitative and qualitative research techniques in her studies. She worked in a marketing research project under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Cengiz Yılmaz between May 2013 and September 2014. Between September 2015 and September 2018, Hilal worked as a researcher in a three-year Erasmus+ project –Case Study Alliance Turkey– coordinated by Prof. Dr. Nazlı Wasti Pamuksuz. She worked in different roles from project writing to organizing workshops within the scope of this project.
