METU Department of Business Administration started life in 1957 as Department of Management Undergraduate Program within the framework of Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences. The department, which has aimed to equip the students with the contemporary concepts of business administration through an interactive approach, admitted students based on a special selection exam until 1974, but effective 1975, it has been doing so through a centrally administered exam. While the department admitted only 50 students a year in 1958 - 1959, this figure increased in the following years, reaching 110 per year presently.
Throughout the years, the department has produced more than 5000 graduates, among whom are scientists and administrators who have earned themselves positions in prominent universities, international organizations and companies worldwide. Presently, the department has more than 600 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. The aim of the program is to train specialists and future administrators needed by public institutions and enterprises, and private companies for the fields of finance, organization, marketing, accounting, management information systems and strategic management.
In curricula formulated with the aim of training specialists and future administrators who can operate in synch with the sector and under the rapidly changing conditions of the present day, the courses are taught by reputable instructors who have completed part of their education abroad; and some electives are offered through the contribution of prominent specialists from the sector.
The Department of Business Administration, which offers education through undergraduate, minor, graduate and Ph.D. programs, has provided research and consultancy services to numerous national and international projects to date. The Management and Administration Research Center, which was founded for this purpose, sustains its activities through the contributions of academicians, research assistants, and students.
After sharing the same building with the other departments in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences for many years, in 2000, the Department of Business Administration moved to the FEAS-B building, the construction and equipment of which was financed significantly by its graduates. In this new location, which was designed to fulfill the requirements of passing years and increasing expectations of students, technological developments were kept up front; and from classrooms to laboratories, canteen to study halls, special attention was paid to ensure that all locations would contribute to the improvement of the quality of education. These facilities, where a variety of amenities are offered, have hosted many high-level organizations, ranging from international scientific congregations to diplomatic mission conferences involving foreign prime ministers.
After they graduate, our students can choose between excellent job opportunities or graduate studies. Many prestigious institutions, including international companies, establish contact with our students before they graduate in order to talk about job opportunities they can offer, and hopefully take the "first pick" from among the graduation candidates.
Management Club, established by our students in 1992, functions as a bridge among academicians, graduates, the business world and students, a bridge constructed through panel discussions, seminars, competitions, and social activities it organizes and the internship opportunities it provides. Today, Management Club continues to be one of the most active student clubs at METU. Other clubs founded by the students of the department, such as Young Entrepreneurs Club, Foreign Trade Club, Finance Club, and Debate Club, have contributed to the great variety of activities.
METU Department of Business Administration aims to retain its international recognition as a leading business school that pursues novelty and innovation in education and research, with increasing focus on the latter seeking interdisciplinary synergies; in order to educate future business leaders and assume a pivotal position in the societal development.

METU Department of Business Administration maintains close ties to the business world, not only through the positions its alumni hold, but also through a number of collaborations at institutional and individual levels. Members of METU Department of Business Administration faculty serve as valuable consultants, within the fields of their expertise, to leading companies, NGOs and state institutions in Turkey (or around the world).

The purpose of the undergraduate program at the Department of Business Administration is to instill in its students the necessary infrastructure to function effectively at middle and senior management levels in the public and private sectors. Methods of instruction have been designed to enable students to develop a critical and solution-oriented outlook regarding the business world, and in the process of education, special attention is paid to utilizing the benefits that computers, game labs, and multimedia services provide.
The curriculum has been developed in harmony with the foundations of strategy and change management, organizational theory, production management, economics, financial management, accounting, marketing, management science, human resources management, and management information systems. Methods of instruction have been designed to equip students with the ability to find solutions to problems they will encounter in the business world.
For students studying in other departments at METU, the department runs three minor programs in general management, corporate finance, and entrepreneurship.
The undergraduate program spans 4 years. An academic year consists of two semesters, 16 weeks each, including the examination weeks. At the end of the academic year, students can choose to continue their education during the 6-week long summer schools. Similar to management schools abroad, classes are conducted in two 75-minute sessions per week (for 3-credit courses). In the first year of the program, courses that aim to introduce and prepare the students to the general area of business administration are offered. In the second year, core subjects within the framework of management discipline are covered and a basis is created to facilitate specialization in functional areas. In the third and fourth years, students may develop expertise in their areas of interest by taking relevant elective courses. For this purpose, more than 20 elective courses are offered every semester.
The department has launched a program that it runs in collaboration with State University of New York, United States of America, in order to benefit from the opportunities created by the globalized world and to reflect this onto the quality of education that it materializes. In collaboration with Binghamton School of Management, which is the prominent institution in the SUNY system and has the AACSB accreditation, METU, within the framework of SUNY Dual Degree Program, has made it possible for students to benefit from the best management education practices, both in Turkey and in the U.S. With the academic and cultural variety and richness gained on both campuses, the students obtain outstanding formation and multi-directionality to serve especially in institutions which play active international roles. Students who are admitted to the program complete the first and third years of their undergraduate education at METU, and second and fourth years at SUNY Binghamton, and thus earn two undergraduate degrees. In this curriculum, after constructing a foundation with core courses from all subfields of the area of business administration, the opportunity of channeling towards specific fields is provided through elective courses.
Master of Business Administration (MBA) program aims to construct an extensive infrastructure of managerial skills in participants from diverse backgrounds. This formation makes it possible for students to raise their awareness in relation to problems they face in business life and to apply technical management concepts and techniques in the process of solving those problems. The program, while it offers the core courses of business administration in a comprehensive and balanced manner, also incorporates various elective courses to ensure specialization in a particular area of study. Students have the option of either writing a thesis or completing the non-thesis program. These theses, prepared in compliance with the counseling of an instructor, aim at conducting a detailed scientific research into a subject of interest to the student. The non-thesis graduate program, on the other hand, requires the students to take a greater number of courses and prepare a term project at the end of the program.
The purpose of the Master of Business Administration for Executives (E-MBA) program, offered upon popular demand from the sector, is to improve and update the managerial skills of those employed at mid- and high-level management positions in different sectors. The curriculum aims to combine fundamental tools with core concepts in the area of business administration. The courses offered in this program, while they are designed to integrate problem solving techniques, ethical values, international developments, team-work, and leadership abilities in interactive settings, also provide a working knowledge of the tools and software technologies used in managerial decision making. In the non-credit term projects which are realized under the supervision of an advisor, problems encountered in real-life business environments are addressed. International seminars, offered as elective courses, aim to improve the participants’ perspectives and help them gain the skills necessary in the international business world.
The Ph.D. program offers expertise in the field of Accounting and Finance, and in particular, aims to train academicians and researchers for these fields. To attain this goal, Turkish and foreign students, selected in compliance with high standards of qualification, are trained in an intensive and comprehensive program. In addition to accounting and finance courses, the program offers courses that enhance the students’ capabilities of conducting research and teaches existing methods in these subjects.
